BLM is seeking a dynamic and energetic individual to to serve as long-term career-seasonal Engineering Equipment Operator in the Central Montana District Office, Division of Support Services. The incumbent is responsible for performing a variety of duties including, but not limited to, the following:
Operating heavy construction equipment (motor patrol, backhoe, front-end loader, dozer, and self-loading scraper) to excavate, backfill, or level earthen materials; maintain roads; install and maintain culverts; and repair and/or replace creek crossings.
Operating a variety of light and heavy duty trucks including pickups, flatbeds, dump trucks, ranging in size from ton to 5 ton.
Performing manual labor such as loading and unloading materials, installing culverts, cattle guards, signs, and utilizing a shovel for cleaning trenches and covering pipelines.
Assisting with training of new operators until they demonstrate the ability to operate the equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
Maintaining assigned equipment and vehicles on a daily basis, including record keeping and preventative maintenance such as lubrication, fueling, and minor adjustments.
Conducting road condition assessments to determine maintenance needs on culverts, bridges; and cleaning ditches and cattle guards, and performing road surface maintenance.
Acting as project inspector on low level project construction and equipment contracts.
Assisting with the District sign program, installing new signs, completing condition assessments, and maintaining existing signs.
Utilizing computers for email correspondence, reports, and bi-weekly time sheet records.
Physical demands and work environment: The work is mostly physical, involving use of hands, arms, feet and legs in lifting, bending, walking, climbing, and operating heavy equipment. Considerable strain is caused by the constant vibration of the equipment and by hazardous working conditions on steep slopes and rough terrain. Due to the location of the controls and attachments on the equipment, the operator is often required to work in awkward or strained positions. Work is performed in all types of weather, often in an open driver's seat while operating equipment on hills, steep slopes or grades, and in timbered areas. The operator is exposed to injury due to the possibility of the equipment overturning, cave-ins, falling rocks or tree branches. Incumbent is also subject to noise, vibration, dust, dirt, and fumes from the exhaust.

This is a LONG-TERM CAREER SEASONAL position (6 to 11 1/2 months). It is expected that the incumbent will work at least 6 months per year, but not more than 11 1/2 months. When work or funds are not available you will be placed in non-pay status.

D.O.T. DRUG TESTING REQUIRED FOR THIS POSITION. This position requires possession of a Commercials Driver's License (CDL). As such, it is a Drug and Alcohol Testing Designated Position (TDP) under the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act of 1991. If the person selected for the position does not currently occupy a CDL Drug and Alcohol Testing Designated Position, he/she will be required to submit to and receive a negative test result prior to appointment. A positive drug or alcohol test result may be grounds for denying final placement into this position. In addition, the Act mandates that the incumbent will be subject to random drug and alcohol testing and that he/she may also undergo reasonable suspicion, post-accident, return-to-duty, and follow-up testing.
